Recently I attended the Big Hair Do event hosted by E4s winner of the Great British Hairdresser, the incredible Keris Weir at her salon in Lurgan.
So what is the Big Hair Do all about? For the third year running hairdressers across the UK spruced up their salons and put on a swoon-worthy spread throwing open their doors to clients and VIPs for the biggest hair party the UK has ever seen. Held on 27th September, 100 salons across the UK held this amazing night and it was nothing short of incredible.
On arrival we where offered a selection of drinks and then canapes supplied by Cajun Lean Supper Club which is a local company in Lurgan whilst taking a tour of Keris stunning salon. Incredibly funky and glamorous, the salon oozes everything that Keris is…Glam, Glam and more Glam! It has incredible full length mirrors set amongst a black and lime green décor and stunning makeup area.
So who is Keris Weir? Nothing short of a very remarkable and successful savvy talented businesswoman who for several years has worked on film, catwalk and has earned a huge celebrity client base and is one of the leading hairdressers in the industry.
After we all mingled and got to check out the fabulous Selfie Mirror! we all got settled down and ready for a very informative evening.
Keris and her team told us all about their incredible journey and all about the salon and the new hair extension range that Keris created herself.
Simon one of her team then demonstrated how to perfect the Australian blow dry which is set to replace the curly blow dry. This is the hottest hair trend so listen up ladies and take note! Simon himself has an impressive CV having just returned from Australia where he was working on Home & Away and also the Australian X Factor! We knew we where in good hands.
Getting to work Simon and Keris talked us through the proper steps of a blow dry. Believe me everything we shouldn’t be doing I was! I am so glad I attended this event as I am now very educated in the dos and don’ts of haircare.
Firstly we should never ever comb or brush wet hair! I for one am very guilty of that. We should squeeze excess water out of our hair not rub vigorously with a towel, again i’m guilty off. Then gently blast our hair with the hairdresser until it is about 70% dry.
At this point we should start using round brushes and section of our hair. Not the metal barrel ones that myself is prone to using, but instead a natural hair bristle brush. See below.
Once Simon had got all the brushes in place and the hair was dried and cooled he removed the brushes and then got his model to tip her hair upside down and he shaked the hair to separate it from the tight bouncy curls. This is the method behind the Aussie blow dry. You don’t have structured curls like a curly blow dry but instead it is a more carefree bouncy style. To finish off the look they added some volumising powder to just lift the roots, below is the incredible finished look.
Another tip we where told was to only wash our hair every 2-3 days and to not use dry shampoo spray (eek) head in hands moment as my life depends on the stuff. Keris instead advised we use a dry shampoo powder and in fact Keris has created her own product which I will definitely be popping up to get, along with booking in for an amazing blow dry with Keris.
After our amazing demo by Simon and Keris they handed the floor over to renowned makeup artist Zoe Boyd who is a professional makeup artist based in Banbridge.
Zoe talked to us about what makeup looks where in for Autumn and how brows now have become less structured and more feathered. She also talked us through lip contouring (to give the illusion of fuller lips) we achieve this by using a darker shade of lip liner but to not go anymore than 1mm above our natural lips.
We where also given some invaluable advice when it comes to applying false lashes. Never put them on top of your own lash line but Zoe instead recommends applying eye liner and then putting the false lashes above that line to ensure you don’t cause any damage to your natural lashes. I always end up pulling half my lashes out and this was due to me incorrectly applying them on top of my lash line. Zoe herself has created a lash line which is stunning and you should all check out her Instagram page for her incredible work.
I want to thank Keris and her team for an incredible evening spent with fantastic guests, and I really can’t wait to return to the salon and treat myself to some incredible pampering and fabulous hair!
